Soil Preparation

The ideal vegetable garden soil should be deep, friable, well-drained, and to have a high organic matter content. No matter the types of soil there are, preparing the soil is one of the most important steps in gardening. Proper soil preparation provides the basis for good seed germination and subsequent growth of garden crops. Whether your soil is light and sandy or heavy clay, digging in bulky organic matter – that is well-rotted manure, compost, leafmould, composted bark, mushroom compost, in fact anything that you can get in bulk – will help. Incorporation of organic matter will help improve soil texture, tilt, aeration and drainage. The best time for soil preparation is in autumn for clay soils and spring for light, sandy soils. Always work soils that are of the proper moisture content. Avoid to work soils too soon in the spring when they are still wet because it will result in damage to the soil structure.
